ROAR (of Orcolat) 1976 – 2026 Never Forgotten “The ROAR tore through the night and divided time into a before and an after. The earth betrayed those who trusted it: lives lost, homes destroyed, and certainties vanished in an instant. When silence followed, something stronger emerged: solidarity, discipline, and an unwavering will to get back up.” – Matteo Pignatelli – In May 1976, the earth of our Friuli region shook with a force that forever changed lives, cities, and memories. In moments, homes became rubble, churches fell silent, and familiar streets turned into fields of dust. Nearly a thousand lives were lost, and countless families were left homeless, without certainties, and without the comforting rhythm of daily life. Yet, amid the devastation, something stronger than fear emerged. The MKM ROAR commemorative folding knife pays tribute to the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the Friuli earthquake. Friuli responded not only with grief, but with courage, solidarity, and an extraordinary ability to rebuild. From the ruins arose a model of reconstruction admired around the world. The earthquake left scars on the land, but it also revealed the strength of human dignity and collective responsibility. Today, 50 years later, we remember the ROAR of the Orcolat (“Bad Ogre” in Friulian) not only as a tragedy, but as a testament to resilience.
